The EFL Cup brought a surprise and a half for viewers when Manchester United got knocked out by West Ham, a team they defeated in the league, just a few days back. In the other matches, Chelsea went through to the next round by defeating a tough Aston Villa through penalties. Tottenham also went past Wolves the same way and Arsenal were comfortable victors over AFC Wimbledon.
West Ham was deserved victors over a second-string Manchester United, who neither had the individual quality nor the teamwork to overcome a 1-0 deficit throughout the match. The solitary goal of the match was scored during the ninth minute of the game, as Ryan Fredricks went past United left-back Alex Telles and gave a brilliant pass to Manuel Lanzini who finished it with style. The hosts couldn’t get back up that one-goal deficit. United midfielder Nemanja Matic got a reprieve when he wasn’t carded for a dangerous foul on Vladimir Coufal. Ultimately, even with 27 shots, United ended up with all blanks in the match.
Chelsea and Tottenham had to go through penalty shootouts before going to the next rounds. Chelsea faced Aston Villa in their third-round game. The blues got the lead in the match through a rare Timo Werner goal in the 54th minute but Villa equalized through Cameron Archer ten minutes later. Chelsea went past them through penalties as Kepa was instrumental for the team to win 4-3. Tottenham and Wolves both scored two goals to cancel each other. Ndombele and Harry Kane scored for the Spurs, while Dendocker and Podence scored for the Wolves. The North London team won 2-3 on penalties.
Arsenal were comfortable victors over AFC Wimbledon as they won 3-0 against them. Alexander Lacazette scored the first goal through a penalty, with Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah scoring the rest. Leicester went past Millwall with goals from Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Yesterday, Manchester City went past Wycombe Wanderers 6-1 and Liverpool defeated fellow Premier League side Norwich 3-0 to go into the fourth round. The next round of matches will take place on the 25th of October.
