Durand Cup, Asia’s one of the oldest football event is set to commence on Sunday, 5th September. There will be a total of 16 teams who will be competing in this tournament this year. Some of the Indian Super League and the I-League teams are going to participle in this year’s Durand Cup.
6 Indian Armed Force teams will also be seen along with I-League and ISL teams. Apart from the 11 teams in the Indian Super League, 5 teams are participating in the cup games. 2018/19 winners Bengaluru FC, FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Jamshedpur FC who made his debut in ISL in the year 2017, and the ISL’s two-time runners up Kerala Blasters are also participating in the tournament.
The 3 teams from I-league include the 2019 tournament (Durand Cup) champions Gokulam Kerala FC, a team from Kolkata, West Bengal named Mohammedan AC, and a New Delhi team Sudeva Delhi FC. There are also 2 teams from the I-league 2nd Division, FC Bengaluru United and Delhi FC which will be seen playing in this 130th edition of Durand Cup. ATK Mohun Bagan which was then Mohun Bagan will not be seen playing in the tournament as informed by their CEO, Raghu Iyer.
“ATK Mohun Bagan couldn’t participate in the Durand Cup or the Calcutta Football League because it has qualified for the AFC playoff on September 22,” ATK Mohun Bagan’s CEO Raghu Iyer said to ANI.
Mohun Bagan was the runner-up team in 2019 after they were lost to Gokulam Kerala FC 1-2 in the final match of Durand Cup 2019. It was Gokulam Kerala’s maiden title.
