The Dutch centre-back didn’t play almost the whole year last season because of his injury. He was badly injured in the last season’s Premier League game against Everton at Goodison Park (Everton’s Stadium). Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a jump for collecting the ball and his foot hit Virgil’s knee. The injury was so serious that he had knee surgery and doctors said he can’t be on the pitch for the whole 20/21 season. This injury to Virgil was bad news for Liverpool too as he is the main man of their defence.

However, after his surgery and proper rest, he is fit to play the next season and already started for Liverpool in the pre-season game. He returned on the pitch almost after one year against Hertha Berlin in the pre-season match. Thus, this is the icing on the cake for the fans as Virgil has announced his contract extension until the year 2025. Virgil also got a new partner this summer when Liverpool signed Ibrahima Konate, the French defender.
“All the hard work we’ve put in so far continues and I am looking forward to what the future brings together with Liverpool,” Virgil van Dijk said to LFCTV.
“Where I am today, how I feel today, as a very senior, important player for the team and the club. That’s just a fantastic feeling and why I feel at home here,” he added.
