Alex Berenguer scored a late winner in the 89th minute for Athletic Club to claim a famous 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
Berenguer became the super sub after he curled a left-footed shot past Thibaut Courtois in the 89th minute at San Mames to finally provide a reward for the Lions, who had dominated the match without being able to make a breakthrough.
Madrid’s best chance fell to Brazilian International Casemiro, whose low second-half shot was saved by the Athletic club keeper.
Real Madrid was without their leading marksmen Karim Benzema and their starter left-back Ferland Mendy, veteran Marcelo, and the young Miguel Gutierrez were absent. Carlo Ancelotti picked David Alaba on the left and an attacking trio of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, and Marco Asensio.
The team from the Basque region started the game well, where Courtois had to make a save from Dani Garcia’s powerful long-range shot. Iker Muniain’s shot went on to the side netting after beating Casemiro inside the penalty box and a last-minute tackle was required from Eder Militao to deny a goal-scoring chance for Nico Williams who was through on goal.
The second half of the game went on with the same tempo with Atheltic club on the front foot, where Raul Garcia failed to score from a delivery which was provided by Muniain, and the best chance for Madrid to score fell to Casemiro who was denied by the Athletic keeper.
Just before the injury time substitute, Alex scored by shooting past the Belgian international and making sure his team advances into the semi-finals of the competition.
