Copa America: Venezuela equalises twice against Ecuador to draw the game at 2-2

In a dramatic Copa America match on Sunday, Ronald Hernandez scored his first international goal in stoppage time to give Venezuela a 2-2 tie against Ecuador.

Ecuador now has one point from two games in Group B, while Venezuela now has two points from three.

Four of the five teams have advanced to the quarter-finals, ensuring a tense finish in a group that also contains Brazil, Colombia, and Peru.

Ecuador and Venezuela are the only South American nations that have never won the Copa America, and while there was plenty of goalmouth action in Rio, the quality of the football on display did not suggest that it would change this year.

Ecuador controlled two-thirds of possession and shots on goal but struggled to convert that advantage into anything more meaningful against a stifling Venezuela.

They had not lost to Venezuela in six games since 2011, and they dominated the first half before taking the lead six minutes before halftime when Ayrton Preciado scrambled a goal within a crowded six-yard box.

On his first international start for Venezuela, Edson Castillo equalised with a header after 51 minutes, but Ecuadorian replacement Gonzalo Plata raced the length of the field to give his side a 2-1 lead with 19 minutes remaining.

Enner Valencia should have sealed the win with a goal 12 minutes from time when he only had the keeper to beat, but the Fenerbahçe striker missed the target.

Hernandez got on the end of a 40-meter cross into the box to bounce a header past the hapless goalie just as it looked like Ecuador would walk away with all three points.
