During their Copa America third-place game against Peru, Columbia defeated the host country 3-2 thanks in part to a pair of goals scored by striker Luis Diaz, one of which was assisted by goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.
On Saturday, the defending champion Brazil and Argentina will face each other in the final at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
During the 28th minute of the game in Brasilia, Peru scored through Yoshimar Yotun, whose soft lob over Colombia defender Vargas was assisted by Christian Cueva. In the 49th minute, Colombia equalized when Juan Guillermo Cuadrado struck a free-kick that went straight through Peru’s wall and past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.
At the 66th minute, Colombia took the lead when Vargas kicked the ball over the opposing defender, finding Diaz face-to-face with Gallese. It was calmly struck with the right foot by the striker to make it 2-1.
After continuing to miss numerous shots at goal, Italian-Peruvian Gianluca Lapadula equalized in the 82nd minute with a header from a corner. In the added time, Diaz scored a second goal with a shot from outside the penalty box. Gallese was beaten by the ball that deflected off a Peru defender. Gallese could only get his fingertips to as it rifled into the top corner.
