Bayer Leverkusen in talks to sign Joel Matip

Bayer Leverkusen is progressing in discussions to sign Joel Matip as their new center-back. Matip, who is now a free agent after his contract with Liverpool expired, has attracted significant interest from several clubs, but Leverkusen appears to be the frontrunner.

Following his departure from Liverpool, Matip is keen to find a new club where he can continue his career. Bayer Leverkusen, under the management of Xabi Alonso, is eager to add an experienced defender to their squad for the upcoming season.

Anfield has seen major changes this summer with the exit of long-time manager Jurgen Klopp and several key players. Adrian has moved to Real Betis, while Thiago Alcantara has joined FC Barcelona’s coaching staff. Matip, who had limited playing time last season, is now looking at a fresh start in Germany.

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Matip has already received a concrete offer from Leverkusen. The Bundesliga champions see Matip, once praised as “unbelievable” by teammate Virgil van Dijk, as a strong addition to their defense.

If the negotiations are successful, Matip will bring his experience to Leverkusen, potentially playing a key role in both the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League for the 2024-25 season.
