Barcelona are believed to be able to free up space in their wage bill to register Gavi this summer, even though Bayern Munich have expressed an interest in the youngster. After signing new terms in September, the 18-year-old midfielder inherited the iconic squad number formerly used by Blaugrana manager Xavi. Due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, La Liga has blocked the registration of a new contract. In 2022-23, the Catalan giants were over budget. Due to this, La Masia graduate Gavi will remain in Juvenil A records of Barcelona for now, as confirmed by La Liga when updating the club’s official website.

A 2–1 La Liga win over Getafe marked Gavi’s first appearance for Barcelona’s first team on 29 August 2021. In the 73rd minute, he was substituted for Sergio Roberto. He scored his first goal for the club and assisted in a 3–2 win over Elche on 18 December.

In addition to Gavi, the Blaugrana have also agreed on a new contract with Ronald Araujo, Marcos Alonso and Sergio Roberto this season, with the Blaurana also being linked with a stunning move to bring Lionel Messi back to the club as a free agent when his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires shortly.
