Athletic Club defeated FC Barcelona in extra time to book their place in the last 8 of this season’s Copa del Rey. Bad days continue for Xavi as FC Barcelona are now out of the Copa del Rey after getting beaten by another La Liga club on Thursday night. The 5-goal thriller game ended with a scoreline of 3-2. There’s no doubt that Athletic Club deserved this victory because throughout the match they had 19 shots on goal as compared to Barcelona’s 7. Xavi couldn’t get his team through to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey but it seems the Barcelona board completely trust Xavi as head coach of the club and feels that the team is rebuilding under him and they have given the job in the right hands.
The first goal of the game was scored in only the second minute by Athletic Club’s midfielder Iker Muniain. It was a great finish at the top corner by Muniain. Barcelona didn’t take too much time to find the equalizer as Ferran Torres scored his first goal for his new club Barcelona in the 20th minute to make the score 1-1 for the visitors. The score remained the same in halftime.
Athletic Club came out to be a dangerous side in the second half as they kept on creating chances but wasn’t able to find the goal. At last in the 86th minute, it was Inigo Martinez who again put the host in lead. But, the goal from Barca’s star midfielder Pedri came from nowhere as in the 90+3rd minute he equalized for Barcelona again which took the game to the extra time.
A penalty goal by Iker Muniain sealed the victory for the host by 3-2. Barcelona conceded a penalty in the 105th minute when Jordi Alba was penalised for putting his hand on the way. After dropping out from UEFA Champions League now Barcelona is also out of the Copa del Rey.
