Barcelona ends the year in 7th place, faces a draw against 10-men Sevilla

It’s not been a good year for Xavi’s FC Barcelona as they have finished in the 7th place in La Liga at the end of this year 2021. It’s still a big question mark on Xavi whether he can help the team finish in the Champions League spot.

FC Barcelona was held to draw against the 10-men Sevilla in La Liga on Tuesday night. The game ended with a scoreline of 1-1 but this scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story of the match. Because of this result, Xavi’s FC Barcelona ends this year 2021 by finishing 7th in the La Liga. They played their last game of this year on Tuesday night against Sevilla who are currently placed in the 2nd position in the league and just 5 points behind the leaders Real Madrid who is sitting comfortably on 43 points.

FC Barcelona is not in good touch this year and the opening goal of the match conceded by them proves the earlier statement. In the 32nd minute, Sevilla’s striker Papu Gomez scored the first goal of the match and it was former Barcelona man Ivan Rakitic who helped the striker as he recorded an assist to his name. Barcelona’s first 45 minutes performance was not up to the mark but still, they managed to score the Equalizing goal in the 45th minute. Defender Ronald Araujo heading goal helped the visitors to get level on goal terms. It was FCB’s forward Ousmane Dembele’s cross to the near post which was converted by Barca’s defender.

The second-half sees no goal but some controversial decisions by the referee as Sevilla was down to 10-men in the 64th minute. The host’s defender Jules Kounde was shown a red card for his bad behavior on the field after he threw the ball into the face of Alba. However, some teammates challenged this decision but it never seemed that VAR is going to reverse it. The match referee was never in doubt seeing this behavior from Sevilla’s centre-back and even the defender knew that the card was coming. Despite receiving a red card, Sevilla defended so well against Barcelona as they didn’t let the visitors score even a single goal in the whole second half. Thus, the final whistle was blown and both the teams had to share the points.
