Atletico Madrid hand shock defeat against relegation battling Alaves

Defending champions Atletico were handed their first defeat of the season after losing 1-0 to Alaves on Saturday.

On Saturday, Diego Simone’s troops played against struggling relegation team Alaves which was probably going to be a comfortable win for Atletico Madrid. Table-toppers Atletico Madrid looked to win their seventh win of the season as they have a very strong side to beat them. The first half started when Alaves took a surprising lead when defender Victor Laguardia headed the ball into the far corner beating keeper Jan Oblak in the 4th minute to take the lead of the match. This was quite astonishing for the Atletico fans to hear. At the end of the 90th minute, it was Alaves who produced a shocking victory over Diego Simeone’s men by 1-0.

The first half commenced with Alaves performing well in the opening minutes. In the 4th minute, when Ruben Duarte whipped a corner into the box as Laguardia rose highest at far post head to beat Oblak as they took the lead. There were a few chance’s created, but the visitors came close when Marcus Llorente drilled one past wide at the other end of the goal. The first half ended with Alaves leading by 1-0 in front of their home fans.

The second half started, with the visitors dominating the possession and accuracy as they created a few chances to level up the score. They struggled to clear opportunities as the home team defence was at its best. The best chance came from Antonie Griezmann who’s shot was fired wide of the goal.

Los Colchoneros continued to push and probe but could not break the hosts down, although Mattheus Cunha was inches away from levelling after Luis Suarez’s clever cutback.

But despite some long-range efforts and crosses into the box, Alaves stood firm for their first three points of the season as they beat defending champions Atletico Madrid.
