Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has signed a new contract. While there is still time before he makes his senior debut, the 19-year-old has risen through the North London youth ranks and featured seven times for the Under-23s last season.
Bernd Leno and Alex Runarsson’s futures are far from secured, yet Arsenal has signed Okonkwo by tying him down to a new long-term contract ahead of his joining up with the first-team squad for the 2021-22 campaign.
Edu told the official Arsenal website that the work of their academy and the development of young players for the first team are integral parts of what Arsenal stands for. Their academy has produced some top players in recent years who have deep connections with the club and its fans.
Edu told the Arsenal website: “It’s great that we have our third goalkeeper who has progressed from our academy and we look forward to seeing more young players coming through. Arthur has worked hard to get this far and we’re confident he’ll have an exciting future.”
While speaking to the Arsenal website Gunners manager Mikel Arteta added: “We welcome Arthur to the first-team squad. We are so happy another academy player has come through our system at the club.”
In addition to his England Under-16, Under-17, and Under-18 caps, Okonkwo has nine clean sheets in 25 appearances across Arsenal’s Under-18 and Under-23 sides.
