Against Messi, things always go well: Thomas Muller

Bayern Munich defeated PSG by 2-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

After Bayern Munich’s 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16, Thomas Muller made a bold statement about his success against Lionel Messi.

“Things always go well against Messi,” Muller said in an interview after the game as reported by Goal.com

While some may view this statement as overly confident, Muller has reason to feel confident when facing Messi on the pitch. The two players have faced off numerous times in the past, including in the 2015 and 2019 Champions League knockout rounds, both of which were won by Muller’s Bayern Munich.

In fact, Muller has been on the winning side in five of the six matches in which he has faced Messi in the Champions League, a remarkable record against one of the game’s greatest players.

Of course, Muller is quick to credit his team’s overall performance rather than taking sole credit for his success against Messi. “It’s not just me, it’s the whole team,” he added. “We had a good plan and executed it well.”

Messi is undoubtedly a formidable opponent, Muller and his teammates have shown that they are more than capable of rising to the challenge.
