Ashwin backs third umpire’s call on Varun catch

Ravichandran Ashwin supported the third umpire’s decision to give Abhishek Sharma out, praising the review process led by Nitin Menon. He said the slow-motion replays and zoomer were assessed properly before the final call.

Ashwin noted that the front-on zoomer angle suggested a slight bounce, but added that it was due to the ground’s slope rather than the ball touching the turf. He pointed out that the side-on angle gave a clearer picture, showing the fingers of Varun Chakaravarthy under the ball.

Focus on angles and clarity in review

The catch had been questioned on the field, with Abhishek waiting for confirmation. Menon checked multiple angles before ruling it a clean catch. Ashwin described it as a standout decision, highlighting how different camera views can change the perception of an incident.

He added that while Varun’s effort in the deep was important, the clarity in decision-making stood out more. The use of technology, including the zoomer, helped remove doubt in a close call.

Abhishek was dismissed for 48, with the decision settling a moment that could have gone either way without clear angles.
