UP government awards Rs 1.50 crore to Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu

Uttar Pradesh government awards Rs 1.50 crore to Olympics silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. The award was presented at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Indian weightlifter told to ANI that she is very grateful to receive such respect from the UP government. Chanu was awarded the cash prize for her winning a silver medal for the country at the Tokyo Olympics this year in the 49kg weightlifting that was the first Olympics medal of the year. “I am grateful to receive such respect. We never got such recognition earlier, so it’s a proud moment for us,” told Mirabai Chanu to ANI post collecting the honour at the event in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh.

India later succeed in achieving four bronze medals, two silver medals and one gold medal that was won by Neeraj Chopra in the Tokyo Olympics. The state government of Uttar Pradesh offered cash prizes that counted Rs 2 crore to the athletes who won gold medals and Rs 1.50 crore to the athletes who bagged silver medals for the country at the Olympics in the Japanese capital.

According to The New Indian Express report, Chanu is expected to be appearing at the National Weightlifting Championships 2021-22 that is scheduled to commence from January 8 to 16 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, which is going to be her first appearance after her legendary performance at the Tokyo Games.
