On 24th July 2021, the former weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was the first athlete to win a silver medal for India and also becomes the first athlete to win a medal for India in Tokyo Olympics in Women’s 49kg Weightlifting category. She lifted a monumental 202kg in total only to stay behind China’s Hou Zhihui who lifted 210 kgs to bag a gold medal for China.
For Mirabai, the fascination of the sport started at the age of 15 in 2006, when she was reading a chapter in her textbook about Kunjarani Devi (the most decorated Indian sportswoman in weightlifting). She went to her mother and announced that she desires to be a weightlifter and represent India in the Olympics as became a strong force for the entire country. Despite her excellent performance, it wasn’t enough for her as China’s Hou Zhihui bagged the gold medal as Indonesia’s Windy Aisha took the bronze home.
She followed the heroic feat of former weightlifter Karnam Malleswari, who had won the bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. India finished 48th in Tokyo Olympics by winning 1 gold, 2 silvers and 4 bronze medals, as it was the best performance by the Indian Contingent’s this year, registering the best-overall medal tally.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also invited Mirabai Chanu and the entire Indian Contingents to the Red Fort, Delhi as special guests on the occasion of Independence Day celebrated on 15th August. Apart from the programme, he will also be invited into his residence for a personal interaction meeting.
