Badminton has brought a lot of good news in these Paralympic Games and it continued to bring more today: Suhas Yathiraj, Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar have reached the finals of their various categories.
Suhas Yathiraj, District Magistrate of the Gautam Budh Nagar area, defeated Indonesian para-badminton player Fredy Setiawan 21-9 21-15 to seal a place in the final round of the SL4 Men Singles Final event. He sealed the semi-final match within 31 minutes to get a place in the finals. Yathiraj started off brilliantly with an early lead in the first set and kept on piling the pressure on his opponent and won the set 21-9.
At the start of the second game, there was an absolute neck to neck game between the two players but Yathiraj took the lead again in this set too and comfortably won the set 21-15 to seal the game and a place to assure a medal in these Games.
Pramod Bhagat, also, won his semi-final game against Japan’s Daisuke Fujihara of Japan 21-11, 21-16 in the men’s singles SL3 event. The World No.1 was pretty comfortable throughout his match against his opponent and dominated him mostly to get a place in the final rounds. He will face British Paralympian Daniel Bethell in the final.
Krishna Nagar also went into the finals by beating British para-athlete Krysten Combs in the semis at the SH6 Men Singles event 21-11 21-10 in straight sets.
Manoj Sarkar, though, lost his semi-final match against Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell 21-8, 21-10 in 38 minutes. He will now play his bronze medal match later against Daisuke Fujihara. Tarun Dhillon too lost his semi-final match against Lucas Mazur 21-16 16-21 21-18 in a fairly competitive match that lasted an hour and three minutes.
Yesterday, the mixed duo of Palak Kohli and Pramod Bhagat reached the semifinal stage by defeating N Saensupa and Siripong Teamarrom in their mixed doubles SL3/SU5 Group Match.
