Disappointingly, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling final on the day of the gold medal match because she had gone above the weight restriction.
Vinesh Phogat reportedly collapsed on Wednesday from dehydration and was taken to a hospital in Paris shortly after news circulated of her disqualification, according to media sources.
According to the Indiatoday report, at the moment, Vinesh is stable and resting at the Olympic Village. Unluckily, the Indian contingent cannot appeal the verdict. Despite the greatest efforts of Vinesh, her coaches and support personnel, including extreme measures such as cutting her hair and trying to draw out blood, they were unable to achieve the necessary results.
After Vinesh’s setback, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked with IOA President P.T. Usha to learn more about the situation and discuss India’s possibilities. Under UWW regulations, “If an athlete does not attend or fails the weigh-in, he/she will be eliminated from the competition and ranked last without rank.”
