The WNBA names its 25 best players ever during its silver jubilee season

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) gave respect to its past and present when it named the league’s all-time top 25 players.

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) gave respect to its past and present when it named the league’s all-time top 25 players. The “W25” as it is known has 10 active players on the list which includes the likes of Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles, Candace Parker and Breanna Stewart. Among the former names in the list, there is Lisa Leslie, Tamika Catchings, Katie Smith and Sheryl Swoopes, along with 15 other retired players who were selected by a panel of members in the media and women’s basketball legends and advocates.

This was the fourth time the league is naming players in its 25th anniversary and has named a list of great players. Those who were named in the previous anniversary lists included Bird, Catchings, Cynthia Cooper, Yolanda Griffith, Lauren Jackson, Leslie, Smith, Swoopes and Tina Thompson who are/were legendary players, in regards to the league.

Sue Bird stated that it was a huge honour to be selected among the top 25 players in the league’s history and is in a state of amazement about being a part of such an esteemed list. She added that it’s been incredible to see the rise in the level of competition in the past 25 years and she is very excited to see what the future holds for this league and the sport.

To be part of this group, the player must have played a minimum of two seasons in the league and checked off four of the seven parameters: recipient of a major individual award; named in the All-WNBA First Team or All-WNBA Second Team; named in the WNBA All-Defensive First Team or WNBA All-Defensive Second Team; was part of the WNBA All-Star Game; has been a member of a WNBA championship team; is currently ranked among the all-time top 40 career leaders in at least one big statistical parameter; and/or earning the WNBA’s season-long Community Assist Award.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has said, “I can think of no better way to honour those responsible for that impact than by unveiling the members of this prestigious group, The W25.”

There will be able a fan vote for the greatest of them all and their pick will be revealed during the WNBA Finals.
