The Chicago Bulls are making a serious push to strengthen their frontcourt this offseason, with their sights set on Clint Capela, a former NBA rebounding champion currently with the Atlanta Hawks.
Matt Moore, a senior NBA writer for Action Network, reported that Chicago is actively engaged in discussions with the Atlanta Hawks regarding the acquisition of Capela. According to Moore, Capela has garnered interest from multiple teams including the Grizzlies, Wizards, Pelicans, and Bulls.
Capela, who is 30 years old, showcased his prowess during the 2023-24 season with averages of 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game for the Atlanta Hawks. Known for his efficiency around the basket, Capela boasts an impressive career field goal percentage of 62.1%. His standout season came in 2021-22 when he led the NBA in rebounding with 14.3 boards per game and finished sixth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Drafted by the Houston Rockets at No. 25 in the 2014 NBA Draft, Capela experienced a breakout season in 2017-18 with Houston, averaging 13.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, earning him recognition as a runner-up for Most Improved Player.
Since joining the Hawks in 2020, Capela has emerged as a defensive anchor but has seen his playing time decrease gradually. With Chicago, Capela would likely fill a significant role, particularly with the Bulls facing the potential departure of Andre Drummond in free agency. This move would bolster Chicago’s frontcourt alongside veteran Nikola Vučević, especially given Vučević’s advancing age.
The appeal for Chicago extends beyond Capela’s on-court contributions; his contract, expiring at the end of next season with a salary of $22.3 million, offers financial flexibility. This aligns with the Bulls’ strategy to strengthen their roster without long-term financial commitments.
While Chicago sees Capela as an upgrade over Drummond and a strategic fit, competition from other interested teams could compel the Bulls to act swiftly. Securing Capela would not only address their immediate needs but also potentially solidify their lineup for the upcoming season.
