Mirabai Chanu wins first gold medal for India at Commonwealth Games 2022

Sanket Safar clinched silver while Gururaja bagged a bronze.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu from India is in the lead in the women’s 49 kg snatch competition after effortlessly lifting 84 kg and 88 kg in her first and second attempts, respectively. Chanu, who won a gold medal at the most recent CWG and a silver medal in the Olympics in Tokyo, attempted to lift 90 kg, but she was unsuccessful in her third effort. The women’s table tennis team’s quarterfinal match will be against Malaysia.

Weightlifter Gururaja Poojary had earlier won bronze in the men’s 61kg division on Saturday, giving India their second medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Gururaja lifted a total of 269 kg to place third in the standings. He had a top lift of 118 kg and had finished fourth after the snatch round, but he put in a better effort to take third place.

Weightlifter Sanket Sargar won silver in the 55 kg men’s final to bring home India’s first medal in the competition before Gururaja’s bout.
