Indian freestyle wrestlers to return to the mat after nine months at the World Cup in Belgrade

Indian freestyle and Greco-roman wrestlers are all set to be seen back competing professionally after a long break due to the pandemic. The wrestling World Cup in Belgrade will see the players back in action which is tentatively scheduled for next month. The dates are yet to be announced but the preparations have begun for December.

The worlds have been called off as various member nations rejected to travel to the Serbian capital due to the virus outbreak. After the United States and Japan withdrew from the event, the UWW called off the event.

The world body has replaced the event with “Individual World Cup” as the body president stated, “we want to see our athletes compete again on the mat”.

“Wrestlers were looking forward to competing at the Worlds and they have shown the same eagerness for the World Cup now. The WFI will be sending the entries in all possible 30 weight categories. They are willing to travel to Belgrade,” WFI’s assistant secretary Vinod Tomar sated.
