India to face the USA in Fide Online Chess Olympiad in the first semi-final 

The first semi-final will see India take on the USA along while Russia will set to face China in the second semi-final match. 


The joint champions Indian are set to the USA in the first semi-final of the Fide Online Chess Olympiad that is scheduled to take place Wednesday from 9 PM onwards. The second semi-final will include the Russians who are the joint title holders along with India last year as they prepare to face China.

“Most of our players are professionals and are used to playing at night. At the moment we don’t really expect it (playing late in the night) will be a major factor for the match,” said the non-playing captain of the team Srinath Narayanan as reported by The Indian Express.

P Harikrishna of team India will be logging into the semi-finals from Prague, Czech Republic while D Harika and Koneru Humpy will be playing from their homes in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam respectively.

In the quarter-final round between India and Ukraine, the two top board matches, the first between Grand Master (GM) Viswanathan Anand and GM Vassily Ivanchuk, the second was between GM P Harikrishna and GM Kirill Shevchenko ended in an overall draw. Furthermore, draws were witnessed in the women’s category as well with WGM R Vaishali and FM Mariia Berdnyk and between GM Humpy Koneru and IM Iulija Osmak.
