In a dramatic twist to the 2025 Formula 1 title race, the FIA has officially disqualified Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after both McLaren cars failed post-race technical inspection.

According to the FIA report, the thickness of the plank assembly on both cars was found below the permitted minimum, resulting in immediate disqualification under technical non-compliance regulations.

McLaren had originally celebrated a double-points finish, with Norris taking P2 and extending his championship lead to 30 points, while Piastri finished P4. But the disqualification now wipes all points scored by both drivers in Las Vegas.

How the championship fight changes

With Norris and Piastri removed from the results, the championship picture swings dramatically.

  • Lando Norris loses his 18 points for P2

  • Oscar Piastri loses his 12 points for P4

  • Max Verstappen, who finished P1, gains significantly in the title fight

After the adjustment:

  • Norris and Verstappen will now be separated by just 24 points

  • Piastri and Verstappen will be tied on points

  • Piastri remains ahead of Verstappen due to more race wins (7 vs 6)

There are 58 points still available over the final two rounds of the season.
