Florentino Pérez is personally leading the search for Real Madrid’s next head coach, with José Mourinho now identified as his preferred candidate for the role next season.
According to The Athletic, the decision-making process is being driven directly by the club president. The report states that Pérez is the main supporter behind a potential return for Mourinho, although there are differing opinions within the club hierarchy over the move.
Real Madrid are currently under the charge of Álvaro Arbeloa, who stepped in as interim manager until the end of the season. With the campaign nearing its conclusion, Arbeloa is expected to leave the position, making way for a permanent appointment ahead of the new season.
Mourinho’s possible return marks a significant development. The Portuguese coach previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013. During that spell, he led the club to a La Liga title and established a competitive side that challenged FC Barcelona at the peak of their dominance.
The report adds that while Pérez is pushing strongly for Mourinho, not all decision-makers at the club are fully aligned with the idea of bringing him back. Internal discussions are ongoing, and no final decision has been confirmed yet.
