Portuguese manager José Mourinho has confirmed that contract renewal talks with SL Benfica are currently on hold, with speculation over a sensational return to Real Madrid CF continuing to grow.

Speaking about his future, Mourinho revealed that Benfica had presented him with a new contract proposal earlier this week. However, the veteran coach made it clear that he is not prepared to make a final decision yet.

“On Wednesday, Benfica’s new contract offer has arrived. But my message to the club was: NOT NOW – thank you,” Mourinho said.

The former Real Madrid manager also suggested that the coming days could be decisive for his future.

“On Sunday, we will see. Next week is important for my future. No one should ever worry about whether someone stays here or leaves because Benfica is and will be bigger than everyone,” he added.

Mourinho was also questioned directly about growing reports linking him with a return to the Santiago Bernabéu. While he avoided giving a direct answer, his comments have only increased speculation surrounding a possible comeback.

“I don’t comment on presidents, quotes and ESPECIALLY not Florentino Pérez,” Mourinho stated.

The comments come at a crucial stage, with negotiations between Mourinho and Real Madrid now understood to be advancing rapidly. Reports on Wednesday suggested that talks between both parties have entered the final stages.
