Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has travelled with the club’s squad to Madrid despite being suspended, as controversy continues to surround his recent disciplinary case.
According to reports confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Prestianni joined Benfica’s travelling party for their crucial Champions League fixture against Real Madrid. Although he will not be available for selection, the Argentine youngster has flown to Spain to support his teammates while the club simultaneously appeals the decision that led to his suspension.
The situation has drawn widespread attention after allegations emerged accusing Prestianni of using racist language during a previous match. Benfica have strongly denied the claims and expressed full confidence in their player.
Club president Rui Costa publicly defended Prestianni, insisting that the winger does not deserve the accusations being levelled against him. “Prestianni is being called a racist, but he is anything but racist. I can guarantee that,” Costa stated. He further added that the club trusts the character of its players and believes the truth will eventually come out.
