Shubman Gill has been entrusted with the crucial number three batting position for the Indian cricket team in the ongoing West Indies series, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara. Gill, who has excelled at number three in domestic cricket, expressed his desire to occupy that spot to the team management, and his wish was granted.
They (team management) asked me where I wanted to bat, and I said I wanted No. 3. It is a position where I want to consolidate.
In the first Test, Gill joined forces with Yashasvi Jaiswal, another debutant, as India’s opening partnership put on a strong display, finishing day one at 80 without loss. Gill emphasized the value of his experience as an opener and his ability to handle the new ball. Indian captain Rohit Sharma confirmed the batting order changes, with Gill at number three and Jaiswal as the opener, providing the team with a left-handed option they have been missing.
It is always good to play with the new ball. I have the experience with the new ball, and when you’re batting at No. 3, it is not very different although it is a little bit of a difference – Gill said.
