India’s off Spiner allrounder, Washington Sundar, was spotted practicing in the MCA stadium ahead of the Test Series against New Zealand. Sundar has been sidelined since July after he picked up a finger injury in a practice match ahead of the test series in England. After that, he missed a good chunk of cricket in the form of the Test Series against England, then the IPL in which he represents RCB, followed by the T20 World Cup, and now the series against New Zealand at home.
Sundar, known for his tight lines and lengths in white-ball cricket, came into the limelight during India’s Tour of Australia 2020/21. After several senior players picked up injuries one after the other, Sundar, who initially picked up as a net bowler, got his opportunity to shine. And he took it with both hands by scoring his maiden fifty in the first inning of the match and by taking the priced wicket of Steve Smith. Since then, the left-hander has scored 265 runs in 4 Tests at an average of 66, including 3 fifties. While with the ball at hand, he has managed to pick 6 wickets.
According to TOI’s sources, the selectors hope Sundar to get fit before the Test Series against South Africa. “He’s a crucial cog in the wheel, especially as he bats so well and adds strength to the lower order,” the source said. Currently, Jayant Yadav is named as the replacement for Sundar in the Test Team. Yadav is making a comeback to the team after five years.
