Virender Sehwag emerges as top contender for chief selector role in BCCI

Virender Sehwag, the former celebrated cricketer, has emerged as a top candidate to assume the crucial position of Chief Selector for the men’s national team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached Sehwag regarding the role, but negotiations have encountered a hurdle due to the proposed remuneration from the board. Sehwag is reportedly seeking better financial terms that align with the demanding responsibilities of the selector’s position. Nevertheless, he remains a highly regarded choice for the role.

Following the departure of Chetan Sharma six months ago, the BCCI has actively been in pursuit of the next chief selector. According to the BCCI constitution, the chairman of the selection committee must be from the North Zone, in line with Chetan Sharma’s representation. Currently, the chairman of the selection panel receives an annual salary of INR 1 crore, while other selectors earn INR 90 lakh.

As reported by PTI, sources within the BCCI revealed that Sehwag was initially approached to apply for the vacant head coach position before Anil Kumble’s appointment. A BCCI official emphasized that Sehwag stands as the sole practical choice from the North Zone for the chief selector role, highlighting his strong suitability for the position.

“During CoA’s time, Viru was asked to apply for the head coach’s job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn’t something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature,” a BCCI official, privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “But if we talk about stature, only he makes the cut from North Zone.”
