The anticipation surrounding Virat Kohli‘s inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad has sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts and experts alike. Recent reports suggest that the Indian skipper’s fate hangs in the balance, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar tasked with making the final call.
According to The Telegraph, the national selectors and team management are bracing themselves to make some tough decisions ahead of the prestigious tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted to leave the selection process to the discretion of the selection committee and team management.
“It remains a very delicate matter and not many are willing to get involved,” stated the report, highlighting the sensitivity of the situation. Kohli’s recent performance in the T20I series against Afghanistan, where he scored 29 & 0 in two matches, has further fueled speculation about his suitability for the T20 format.
It is understood that Agarkar had a discussion with Kohli regarding the change in T20I approach before the series against Afghanistan. However, the slow wickets in the West Indies are perceived to be unsuitable for Kohli’s style of play.
With the selection now resting on Agarkar’s shoulders, Kohli faces the onus of delivering exceptional performances in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) to bolster his case for inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad.
While the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, confirmed Rohit Sharma as the captain for the World Cup, Kohli’s role remains uncertain. “We will discuss Virat’s role in due course,” Shah commented, leaving Kohli’s fate hanging in the balance.
The emergence of younger players like Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav has further added to the selection dilemma. Moreover, the anticipated return of Hardik Pandya, who has been sidelined due to injury, adds another layer of complexity to the decision-making process.
As the deadline for submitting provisional squads approaches, all eyes are on Agarkar and the selection committee to navigate through this challenging decision. India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup is set to commence against Canada on June 5, adding urgency to the selection process.
