Indian former captain, Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma has backed Rohit Sharma for leading the team to “newer heights”, while also acknowledging that the team has no better contender than Rohit to take the captainship from Kohli in Test Cricket.

After Kohli exits from the ODI captaincy last November, a month after stepping down from the role in T20I cricket, BCCI announces Rohit as the new white-ball captain and the vice-captain of the Test Cricket, replacing out of form Ajinkya Rahane.

Rohit Sharma has come as a frontrunner to Kohli after the team’s loss against test cricket against South Africa 2-1 earlier this month.

Rajkumar Sharma backed Rohit Sharma by saying that there is no other contender besides Rohit who can lead the team in all three formats. He believes that Rohit is the better choice, as he has done excellent captaincy in IPL and also whenever he captained the Indian team. Rajkumar has high hopes for Rohit Sharma to lead the team in achieving “newer heights”.

Other contenders include KL Rahul who led the team against South Africa in a three-match ODI series and two inexperienced options, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah.

Rajkumar also shared his opinion regarding India’s team selection for the upcoming West Indies series.

“It becomes easy if Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid are on the same page, if the captain and coach want a particular team, the selectors feel it right to give them that team. This should happen also and I feel that will happen as well,” Rajkumar further said to India News.

India will play against West Indies in a limited over series (three ODI’s and three T20Is) starting from February 6.
