Tesco to expand operations in Bengaluru, likely to create 16,500 jobs

British retail giant Tesco plc has announced plans to expand its presence in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which is expected to generate 16,500 new jobs. Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries, MB Patil, revealed the details following discussions with Tesco’s leadership, emphasizing Bengaluru’s key role as a global hub for the company.

Key highlights of Tesco’s expansion plans

  • Workforce expansion: Tesco plans to hire 1,500 additional employees.
  • New facilities: The company will establish a new building in Bengaluru and a distribution center in Hoskote, collectively expected to create 15,000 jobs.
  • Existing operations: Tesco currently employs 4,000 people in Bengaluru through Tesco Business Services (TBS) and Tesco Technology.

Tesco also operates in retail through a joint venture with the Tata Group under the Star Bazaar brand.

  • Magellan Aerospace reaffirmed its commitment to Karnataka, with the government pledging full support for the company’s expansion plans, further strengthening the state’s position as a global aerospace hub.

Invest Karnataka 2025

The roadshow, led by MB Patil, is part of Karnataka’s preparations for the Invest Karnataka Global Investors Meet in February 2025. The event aims to attract investments across aerospace, defence, automotive, and education sectors. Karnataka’s pro-business environment and initiatives like the KWIN City project were showcased to leading global organisations.

“This expansion of Tesco and engagements with global companies like Rolls Royce and Pearson solidify Karnataka’s position as a global investment destination,” Patil said, adding that the Invest Karnataka 2025 event will serve as a platform to foster partnerships and innovation in the state.
