The second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 between India and England is underway at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5. England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to field first in the high-stakes knockout clash.
Speaking at the toss, India captain Suryakumar Yadav said his side was looking to bat first considering the conditions and the magnitude of the game. “We were looking to bat first. It’s a semifinal, a big game, and there’s wind around too. I don’t think there will be much dew,” Suryakumar said.
England skipper Harry Brook explained the decision to bowl first, saying the pitch looked good for the seamers early on. “We’re going to have a bowl. Looks like a good wicket and hopefully we can get off to a good start with the ball. They obviously have a lot more experience on this ground than us. T20 cricket is such a fickle game — you never know what’s going to happen,” Brook said. England have made one change, bringing in Craig Overton in place of Rehan Ahmed.
Pitch report from Wankhede
According to the pitch report by Nasser Hussain and Ian Bishop, the surface for the semi-final is pitch number seven in the centre of the square. The conditions at the Wankhede Stadium are slightly warmer compared to the earlier matches in the tournament, with temperatures expected to drop from around 32°C to about 28°C during the game.
A breeze of around 15 km/h is blowing across the ground toward the Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar stands. The boundary dimensions are around 75 metres straight and roughly 65 metres on both sides.
Historically, this pitch has offered the most turn among the surfaces on this square, averaging around 2.3 degrees of spin. However, the strip for tonight’s game appears harder with a light covering of grass after being cross-rolled, which could help the ball come onto the bat better.
Ground staff have also applied anti-dew measures to reduce the impact of moisture later in the evening, aiming to keep conditions balanced for both teams.
High-stakes knockout clash
The match marks the second semi-final of the tournament, with the winner advancing to the final. India reached this stage after a dramatic Super 8 victory over West Indies, powered by Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 at Eden Gardens.
England topped their Super 8 group to set up another major clash against India, continuing a growing rivalry between the two sides in recent T20 World Cups.
The contest at Wankhede is expected to draw strong support for India, with a packed crowd anticipated in what promises to be a high-pressure encounter between two of the tournament’s strongest teams.
