Shubman Gill Claims No. 1 Spot in ICC ODI Rankings, Surpasses Babar Azam

India’s rising batting sensation, Shubman Gill, has ascended to the coveted No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI Rankings, surpassing Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. Despite a relatively quiet Cricket World Cup performance, Gill managed to outshine Babar, accumulating 830 rating points while Babar slipped to the No. 2 position with 824 ratings.

It is noteworthy that Gill is the second fastest Indian cricketer to reach the No. 1 ODI ranking. Former Indian captain MS Dhoni holds the record for achieving the top ranking in the fewest innings, taking just 38 innings. In contrast, Gill took 41 innings to secure the prestigious No. 1 position in ODIs. He now joins the esteemed list of Indian batters who have claimed the top spot in ODI rankings, a group that includes legends like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.

Gill’s exceptional performance this year speaks volumes about his cricketing prowess. He has amassed 1149 runs in 26 ODIs at an impressive average of 63.00. Gill has struck six centuries in the ongoing year, placing him among the elite ranks of batters with five or more hundreds in a single year.

Despite his stellar achievements, Gill is yet to score a century in the current World Cup. Throughout the tournament, he has accumulated 219 runs from six innings. It is worth mentioning that Gill faced setbacks in the initial matches of the World Cup due to a bout of dengue fever.
