Shreyas Iyer has officially returned to the BCCI’s central contract list for the 2024–25 season, but notably, not in the higher-tier A category. Iyer has been included in Grade B, a clear sign of his gradual reintegration into the national setup after a period of uncertainty regarding his future.

Last year, Iyer was excluded from the BCCI’s annual contracts, along with Ishan Kishan, following criticism from the board for skipping domestic cricket commitments despite being out of the national side. The BCCI’s stance was firm: players who are not representing India must participate in domestic tournaments.

However, Iyer seems to have taken the message seriously. He returned to domestic action, notably representing Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, and reaffirmed his value with crucial contributions in ICC tournaments. His form, intent, and commitment appear to have played a role in BCCI’s decision to restore his contract, albeit not at the highest grade.

In contrast, Ishan Kishan’s name remains absent from the latest contract list, raising fresh doubts about his international future amid speculation of him not fulfilling the board’s expectations regarding domestic participation.

The 29-year-old Iyer now shares the Grade B bracket with players like Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. While not yet in the A+ or A tier, his return marks a step forward in regaining full trust and status within Indian cricket’s top fold.
