India’s injury concerns in the ongoing five-Test series against England seem to be escalating, with Shreyas Iyer potentially sitting out of the upcoming Rajkot Test due to back stiffness, as per MCA sources.
Reports indicate that the National Cricket Academy has informed the BCCI about Iyer’s fitness status. However, the squad for the third Test and beyond is yet to be finalized, with selectors yet to convene for the meeting.
Originally scheduled for February 8, the selectors’ meeting is now expected to take place today, followed by a formal announcement of the squad.
This setback adds to Iyer’s recent struggles with back issues, which have plagued him over the past year. Despite missing the start of last year’s Border-Gavaskar series, he returned to the team in August after a lengthy rehabilitation process.
India has already grappled with several key players missing in the series, including Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja, due to fitness concerns. Despite the absences, the team managed to draw level in the series.
The third Test is slated to commence on February 15 in Rajkot, posing additional challenges for the Indian team amidst the mounting injury woes.
