Despite their recent batting woes in the Ranji Trophy final, Mumbai cricketers Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer have found staunch support from teammate Shardul Thakur. Thakur, the top-scorer for Mumbai in the first innings of the final against Vidarbha, believes it’s just a rough patch for the experienced duo and called for collective support rather than criticism.
Thakur, who scored 75 runs and also picked up a wicket in the first innings, expressed confidence in Rahane and Iyer’s abilities despite their lean run of form. Rahane has managed only 141 runs in eight Ranji matches this season, while Iyer has struggled to make an impact with just 58 runs from three games.
Acknowledging their match-winning potential, Thakur emphasized the need to support Rahane and Iyer during this challenging phase. He praised their commitment and attitude on the field, highlighting their positive influence as role models for younger players in the team.
While defending the senior pros, Thakur also expressed disappointment with some of the younger batters for not capitalizing on their opportunities in the crucial Ranji final. He urged the team to regroup and focus on putting up a better batting performance collectively in the second innings.
Reflecting on his own innings, Thakur expressed his love for playing in tough situations, attributing his resilience to the hardships he faced while pursuing cricket. He also shared emotional sentiments about teammate Dhawal Kulkarni, who will retire after the final, acknowledging Kulkarni’s support and mentorship throughout his career.
As Mumbai prepares for the remainder of the Ranji final, Thakur’s words of encouragement and solidarity with Rahane and Iyer underscore the team’s determination to bounce back and put up a strong performance in the ongoing match.
