SA vs NED – South Africa inch closer to keeping their World Cup automatic qualification hopes alive

South Africa dismissed the Netherlands for 189 runs in the 2nd ODI game

South Africa dismissed the Netherlands for 189 in the second one-day international on Friday at Willowmoore Park, Benoni. Much attention is rarely paid to the two end-of-season ODI matches between South Africa and the Netherlands.

The Proteas need to win these games. The hosts have not yet qualified for the Cricket World Cup in India in October and November. After winning the match, South Africa is on the same points as the eighth-placed West Indies, who have played all their games. This puts South Africa within reach of automatic qualification for this year’s World Cup fifty-overs. To secure their spot without qualifying in June, South Africa must beat the Netherlands again on Sunday.

Even with two wins, there is still a chance that Ireland could edge out the team from England. The team must, however, win 3-0 against Bangladesh in May to qualify for this year’s World Cup fifty-overs. As far as the Proteas are concerned, they will hope that Ireland loses to Bangladesh in May.
