Rohit Sharma’s “backing” helped R Ashwin get selected in the T20 World Cup squad for India as the team look to be one of the favourites in the tournament that is going to be hosted by the UAE.

It has taken Ashwin more than four years to come back to white-ball cricket. His last match was the Champions Trophy Final in 2017 where Pakistan beat India pretty comfortably. Both him and Ravindra Jadeja were dumped in favour of Yuzvendhra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. They were deemed ineffective in the limited-overs format but Ashwin has now been selected and Jadeja proved himself much earlier through his batting performances but also by being an economical bowler and a gun fielder.

Rohit Sharma proved to be the driving force behind the offspinner’s return to the white ball fold. The board and selectors sought his opinion before the meeting and he strongly insisted on Ashwin being selected in the team. Captain Virat Kohli, too, held the same opinion when he was asked about this selection. Earlier, Kohli suggested that Ashwin would get a chance if spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar’s performances dropped drastically and now, Sundar is out due to a finger injury and his slot is up for grabs.

Kohli and Sharma both highlighted the fact that the tournament is going to be played in the UAE where the pitches are going to be slow and Ashwin has been one of the best spinners in the IPL for the last two years and hence his selection would be justified.

R. Ashwin will be very happy with the selection as he will represent his country in a major tournament again after 2017 and will play a crucial role in the team winning it this year.
