India had a stunning start to the big tournament by defeating Australia, Afghanistan, and archrival Pakistan. With bowling and batting going in perfect balance for the men in blue, three-time World Cup winner Ricky Pointing gave credit to Sharma for his captaincy. He is convinced that Sharma is the key to success in the World Cup campaign and not losing focus despite enormous fan support.
“He’s very laid-back, Rohit. He is very laid-back with everything he does. You can even see that by the way that he plays. He’s a pretty laconic sort of batsman as well, and that’s the way he is both on and off the field,” Ponting told the ICC in an interview powered by DP World.
The Hitman took the captaincy throne after Virat Kohli in both limited-over formats in December 2021. Pointing strongly believes that Sharma is best as the skipper, also giving Kohli his space to focus on what he is best at: scoring runs for India.
“Someone like Virat, who is a bit more heart-on-the-sleeve and probably listens to the fans and plays up with the fans a little bit more, someone with his personality would probably find it a bit harder. But I think Rohit will be fine with it. He’s a terrific bloke and has been a great player for a long time, and he’s done a great job as the leader of India,” Pointing added.
The former Aussie star also mentioned India as one of his favorites this year and has full potential to lift the trophy.
“They’ve got all bases covered with their fast bowling, their spin, and their top- and middle-order batting. They’re going to be extremely hard to beat. But we’ll see how they hold up under extreme pressure as well,” Pointing concluded.
