Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has undergone a successful left knee surgery at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital. The 41-year-old, who led the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title, flew to Mumbai from Ahmedabad after the IPL final on May 30 to consult with renowned sports orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.
Dhoni, known for his resilience and leadership, had been managing a knee injury throughout the IPL 2023 season. Despite the discomfort, he exhibited exceptional wicket-keeping skills but struggled with his batting and running between the wickets.
The surgery, performed by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, a prominent figure on the BCCI medical panel who has previously operated on several top Indian cricketers, including Rishabh Pant, was deemed a success. A source close to the CSK management revealed that Dhoni is in good spirits and is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a day or two. Following his discharge, Dhoni will embark on a period of rest before commencing an extensive rehabilitation program.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had earlier stated that the decision to undergo surgery would be entirely up to the legendary captain himself. After the IPL final, Dhoni had hinted at the possibility of retirement but expressed his desire to play another IPL season for the passionate CSK fans who have showered him with love and support.
Reflecting on his decision, Dhoni had said, “The easy thing for me to say is thank you and retire. But the hard thing to do is to work hard for nine months and try to play one more IPL season. The body has to hold up. But the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to play one more season.”
