Mohammed Shami refutes rumours of being ruled out of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has dismissed reports suggesting that he is doubtful for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in November. Shami, who recently underwent surgery after an impressive performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, clarified his situation through a post on social media platform X.

Reports had surfaced that Shami’s recovery from an ankle injury might take longer than expected, and that he could potentially miss the Australia series. However, Shami directly addressed the rumors, calling them baseless. He wrote: “Why these type of baseless rumors? I’m working hard and trying my level best to recover. Neither the BCCI nor I have mentioned that I am out of the Border Gavaskar series. I request the public to stop paying attention to such news from unofficial sources. Please stop and don’t spread such fake fake fake & fake news, especially without my statement.”

A report in the Times of India, quoting a BCCI source, suggested that Shami’s injury flared up and might require additional time for recovery. The source mentioned that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical team had been working on Shami’s rehabilitation for over a year, with one of the best workload management systems in place.

Shami’s recovery journey

Earlier in September, Shami spoke about his determination to make a comeback. He shared that while he’s working on his fitness, he is focused on ensuring there is no discomfort upon his return to international cricket. He emphasized that he won’t rush back into action until he’s 100% fit.

Shami has started bowling in practice sessions but is being cautious to avoid any further injuries. “The stronger I return, the better it is for me. I don’t want to rush and risk getting injured again,” he stated.

Despite speculation, Shami’s statement makes it clear that he is on track to make a comeback and is aiming to be part of the Indian squad for the crucial Test series against Australia. The pacer remains committed to his rehabilitation and return to peak fitness.
