Kane Williamson’s participation in ODI World Cup uncertain as recovery takes priority

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has cast doubt on his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, stating that the prospects of him playing are on the “unlikely side of expectations.”

Williamson suffered a ruptured ACL in his right knee during the IPL 2023 opener in March and has been undergoing rehabilitation since then.

While he hasn’t completely ruled out featuring in the World Cup, he emphasized that his focus is on healing his injury and not rushing the recovery process.

The New Zealand team’s head coach, Gary Stead, had previously mentioned the slim chances of Williamson’s inclusion but didn’t want to rule it out entirely.

Williamson expressed his eagerness to return to training and spend time with his teammates but emphasized the need to take things one day at a time and not set a specific timeline.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his World Cup participation, Williamson’s primary concern is regaining full fitness and ensuring his long-term well-being.
