Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been nominated for the monthly awards given out by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for August after great bowling performances in England during the Test Series. He has taken 16 wickets during this series and is the second-highest wicket-taker among all the bowlers who are playing between India and England.
Other than Bumrah, England Test captain Joe Root, Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi is the other cricketers nominated for this month. root has played a huge part in England winning the third Test at Headingly in Leeds. He has scored a century in at least one innings of the three test matches. This purple patch of form has led to him earning the top spot in the ICC Test Batting Rankings, superseding the likes of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, like Bumrah in England, has also shown his ability away from home in the West Indies. In the two tests where Pakistan played West Indies, he took 18 wickets in total during the entire test series. He played a big role in his team’s 2nd test victory over the West Indies as he managed 10 wickets during the match. Pakistan managed to level the series with an impressive 109 run victory. Afridi became the fourth-youngest fast bowler to take ten test wickets during a match after Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Mohammad Zahid.
The others nominated were women cricketers which include Thailand’s Nattaya Boochatham, and the Ireland duo of Gaby Lewis and Eimear Richardson. Boochatam helped her team win a series against Zimbabwe with both bat and ball and has climbed up to her career-best rankings among the T20I batters, bowlers and all-rounders. Gaby Lewis and Eimear Richardson played a big part in them winning three out of four T20 World Cup qualifying matches. Lewis scored the first century in Women T20I’s ever which led to a 164 run victory over Germany.
