A day following the trade of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill has assumed the captaincy role for Gujarat Titans, marking a transition in leadership for the franchise. Having led the Titans in 2022 and 2023, the upcoming IPL 2024 season will see Shubman Gill taking charge as captain for the first time.
Expressing his delight, the 24-year-old Gill stated, “I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons, and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket.”
Gill, who commenced his IPL journey with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018, joined the Titans ahead of the 2022 auction after being released. Titans, as a new entrant, signed Gill, along with Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan, ahead of the 2022 auction. Gill’s impactful performances were instrumental in Titans’ triumphant debut season, where he scored 483 runs in 16 matches and top-scored with an unbeaten 45 in the final against Rajasthan Royals.
In IPL 2023, Gill continued his stellar form, emerging as the highest run-scorer for Titans with 890 runs in 17 innings, including three centuries. Although Titans finished as runners-up to Chennai Super Kings in the final, Gill’s contribution showcased his leadership potential.
Currently fifth among the top run-scorers in the IPL over the last six years, Gill is set to lead a robust Titans lineup featuring experienced players such as Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan, David Miller, Matthew Wade, and Wriddhiman Saha. Gill brings some captaincy experience to the table, having previously led Indian domestic sides in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.
