A day before the IPL’s “El Clásico”, a short exchange at training offered a reminder of the relationships that sit beneath the rivalry.

At the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians shared a video capturing the bond between MS Dhoni and Deepak Chahar. Dhoni spotted Chahar approaching with a camera crew and cut him short, saying, “Tu aaya, saath mein camera laya… bhaga isko.” Then, smiling, he added, “Haan, nahi toh baat nahi kar paayenge.” It was typical of their dynamic over the years.

Reactions have centred less on rivalry and more on respect. Some called it a moment that goes beyond teams, pointing to Chahar’s regard for Dhoni as a mentor. Others said they were simply enjoying watching the exchange, with the tone light despite the fixture’s intensity.

Chahar’s bond with Dhoni, but form yet to follow in new colours

Chahar was a key part of Chennai Super Kings from 2018 to 2024, taking 76 wickets and helping them win three titles. He moved to Mumbai Indians for INR 9.25 crore at the 2025 auction. This season has been slow for him. He has gone wicketless in two of his early games and conceded heavily, with little impact so far.

The familiarity with Dhoni remains. Over the years, their exchanges have often been easy, with Dhoni taking on a guiding role. That tone has not changed, even with Chahar now in different colours.

Dhoni, Rohit likely to return as fitness watched closely

There is still some uncertainty around the two senior players. Dhoni has been in rehab but is expected to be available. Rohit Sharma has been back in the nets and is also likely to play. Both are in the later stages of their careers, and their presence on the field still carries weight.

MI vs CSK – 23 April

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings meet again on 23 April at the Wankhede. The fixture has long been seen as the IPL’s “El Clásico”. Mumbai hold a narrow 21–19 lead in 40 meetings. They have met in four finals, with Mumbai winning three. While Mumbai dominated earlier years, recent matches between the sides have been closer, with little separating them.
