When T20 cricket was started, it was said that this format is made only for the batters, and in this format whichever team has good batters, that team will win more matches but as the T20 format progressed, bowlers’ contribution also became more in this format. In IPL also, batters were given more preference than bowlers. But in the last few years, the role of bowlers in IPL and T20 formats has increased a lot, and now the team pays equal attention to bowling as well as batting.
The list of highest wicket-takers in IPL history has three Indian and two foreign bowlers. All three Indian bowlers included in this list are spin bowlers and have been playing IPL for a long time. These five bowlers include Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo, Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawla, and Harbhajan Singh. Out of these five bowlers, only Dwayne Bravo will be seen playing in the upcoming IPL season.
Here are the Top 5 bowlers with the most wickets in IPL history:
Lasith Malinga(170 wickets)
Lasith Malinga is at the first position in this list and it is not surprising to have him in the first place. Lasith Malinga has played 122 matches in IPL history in which he has taken a record 170 wickets. Out of these 170 wickets, 108 wickets have come in the death overs. Lasith Malinga made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2009 and played for Mumbai Indians till 2019.
Dwayne Bravo(167 wickets)
After Lasith Malinga, the second name in this list comes Dwayne Bravo who has taken 167 wickets at an average of 24.31 in 151 IPL matches. Like Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo is also considered a specialist in the death overs and has bowled very well in the death overs for Chennai Super Kings. Dwayne Bravo has performed brilliantly under the captaincy of MS Dhoni and in 2015 he also won the Purple Cap by taking 26 wickets.
Amit Mishra(166 wickets)
Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra is the third name in this list after Dwayne Bravo. Amit Mishra has done exceptionally well in IPL so far and he is the most successful Indian bowler in IPL history. Amit Mishra has registered 166 wickets in 154 IPL matches. Amit Mishra has gone unsold in the 2022 mega auction but his record in the IPL is phenomenal.
Piyush Chawla(165 wickets)
After Amit Mishra, the name of another Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla comes on this list. Piyush Chawla was included in the squad of Mumbai Indians last year but he got a chance to play only one match there. Piyush Chawla is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history and he has played 165 matches in IPL in which he has taken 157 wickets at an average of 27.39.
