TATA IPL 2022: “If Dhoni is in the XI, he has to be the captain” – Mohammed Azharuddin

Following CSK’s terrible start to the season, Jadeja, who’d been made captain two days before the start of the ongoing IPL season, dropped down as captain.

On Saturday evening, Chennai Super Kings confirmed that Ravindra Jadeja will handover the captaincy to MS Dhoni for the rest of the season.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin reacted to the announcement on the ‘Not just Cricket’ show, saying, “ I don’t know why Chennai gave the captaincy to Jadeja, which exposed his game, to be honest. He is a brilliant fielder and he dropped some easy catches”.

Speaking further, he stated, “If Dhoni is in the XI, he has to be the captain”.

This season, Jadeja has struggled with both bat and ball. He has 112 runs at an average of 22.4 and a strike rate of 121.74 in eight matches, far less than the stats he had achieved in the past two years. His 227 runs in 2021 came at a strike rate of 145.51, with a high of 62*.

Before this IPL season, Jadeja never had led a team at the senior level, and it’s possible that the decision to provide him the captaincy was fast. Given that Dhoni guided an ageing squad to the trophy last season while not scoring many runs himself, it was difficult to see why the 40-year-old wouldn’t utilise his savvy as a captain.
