Sourav Ganguly likely to replace Ricky Ponting as Delhi Capitals head coach in IPL 2024

Ricky Ponting’s tenure as the head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) is expected to come to an end before the start of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain and current director of the DC team, is set to take over as the coach. Ponting, who has been in the coaching role since 2018, failed to secure an IPL trophy for DC. The team’s performance hit rock bottom in the IPL 2023 season, finishing last with only five wins.

Ganguly’s association with the DC franchise spans over two years, serving as a mentor in the 2019 edition of the IPL. He played a significant role in guiding the team to the playoffs in the 2019 and 2020 editions. With his experience and success as a mentor, transitioning into the coaching role would be a natural progression for the former southpaw.

According to reports in Sangbad Pratidin, Ganguly is expected to assume the coaching responsibilities for DC. It seems Ponting has already made up his mind to step down from his coaching role after six years at the helm. The former Australian captain has reportedly discussed his departure from DC with a few close individuals.

Ponting’s coaching tenure coincided with DC’s successful campaigns under his guidance and the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. However, the team’s recent struggles and their last-place finish in the IPL 2023 season have likely contributed to the decision for a change in leadership.

As Ganguly prepares to take on the coaching role, DC will be hoping for a revival in their fortunes and a fresh approach to achieve IPL success. The franchise will look to build on their previous playoff appearances under Ganguly’s mentorship and capitalize on his strategic insights and leadership abilities.
